1. Optical pick. JDSU. But ask Pat Mudge on the SDLI - JDSU thread. She has an indepth understanding of the field, its competitors and the emerging companies. Further I trust her as an unbiased source of useful information.
She might give you things I haven't looked into such as NUFO... To my knowledge, JDSU is the 800 lb gorilla for the components needed to light up dark fiber.

2. Japanese are already marketing a 2 way video cellphone (not sure whether it was a 2.5G or 3G)

Long term this overcapacity problem in both fiber and fabs will result in much lower prices much sooner than would have been the case. And that can only result in more applications of the technology becoming viable sooner.

Now if I can only survive while waiting for the inevitable explosion.
