Trade can bring prosperity. Any and all nations choosing self-sufficiency in everything have suffered economic disaster.

Any nation depending on the unfair exploitation of their neighbours is a nation headed for trouble.

Any nation that encourages its people to squander finite resources is inviting disaster.

In a democracy, the policy of the nation is the result of the cumulative decisions of its population. If each citizen chooses to drive a fuel thirsty vehicle and chooses a lifestyle requiring them to travel great distances regularly, then those citizens will form a nation dependent on fuel.

A citizen can vote at the ballot box and at the auto showroom. The air-conditioning salesman and the campaigning politician are both attempting to determine our energy needs: we decide.

When I want to assign blame for the current mess, I stand before a mirror.
