Re: Intel executives did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The VAR who builds our systems for us usually can have a system ready within about 3 days of our sending an order. He gets the parts from his distributor the day of the order or the following day. We ordered 2 1.33GHZ Athlon systems almost 3 weeks ago and they will finally be ready tomorrow. The distributor claims that for two weeks running an OEM took 100% of the high speed parts from AMD. This week the regular shipment to distribution got through, but the backlog still hasn't been satisfied (he got our 2 for us, though, and has been able to perform burn-in and test). Total X86 CPU shipments have been running about 30 million per quarter, and most of those must be Celeron/Duron/PIII/Athlon low to medium value chips. Demand for high end chips can't be more than about a million a month and AMD is capturing at least half of those sales, shutting out P4. Given the well known capability of Athlons to be overclocked, there simply cannot be problems with binsplits at Dresden. It's true that AMD has been having some trouble satisfying demand for Athlons, but they've pretty much kept up with it, and they've obviously shipped enough parts to almost completely shut down the launch of the P4. It's really quite amazing. Remember how terrifying WILLAMETTE was prior to its release? The it hit the brick wall of Athlon price/performance and the rest is history.
