Ideas are always subject to challenge. That is not a problem. The problem is one of inspecting all aspects of a question considerately. I do not mean that we are all in a state of suspense, or have to refrain from advocacy. I just mean that there is a large difference between trying to put people in their place, and putting ideas to the test, including one's own.

How we evaluate truth claims in varying circumstances is a rather complicated topic. It is slothful to say that differences of opinion mean that no one has the truth. Perhaps someone does. The main way of deciding is to see the congruence of the truth- claims with what we think we know. Additionally, one wants to see how it all hangs together, and to contemplate practical ramifications.

Those who are greedy or lust for power may very well wreak havoc, if they see violence as the means to get what they want. It does not take believing much of anything to cause trouble. On the other hand, certain beliefs may civilize better than others. History is a complex affair, and disentangling the strands is not always easy. I am not so certain as you of the lessons to be drawn.....
