I don't think he tried to stereotype anyone. This was a movie about individuals and individualism. I didn't even remember the abusive father being a Christian. I remember him being a violent and aggressive male, and homophobic. The Christianity certainly wasn't a major factor for me. And who was a Nazi? I thought the father merely had something in his collection that was a Nazi artifact. A lot of US soldiers who fought the Nazis (and hate/hated the Nazis) have that kind of memorabilia- I assumed such was the case with the father.
