Wrong. If alternative energies were cost competitive and politically viable, companies in our capitalist system would jump on it. Give me an affordable fuel cell and I'll be the first off the grid--the "present power structure," as you put it, won't stop me. Or, give me solar panels that don't require a whole other lot to house them.
As for large solar and wind mill farms, until they get them more efficient, environmentalists won't go for them. They say they like them, in theory, but then get them out to one and watch the horror on their faces. They are huge and ugly, not "one with the environment."
Have you ever seen the thousands of wind mills in the Tehachapi pass in California. These huge structures sit atop the beautiful mountains for miles and miles. It one of the ugliest things I've ever seen.
In contrast, I live in scenic San Luis Obispo, where I'm ten miles from the Diablo nuclear power plant. It's sits on the beautiful coastline south of Montanas de Oro. No impact to scenery or the environment. Nice clean power for I think two million homes.
You also mentioned water. I assume you mean dams. Gee, the environmentalist extremists don't want that either. We're trying to raise the level of a dam around here by something like 25 feet, but it will never go through because the supposed disasterous impact to the habitat. They're really upset because we'll lose some oak trees, which to some around here are more precious than human life.
I, too, believe that fuel cells and eventually solar deployed house by house will be the answer. But, it's not here yet. There are no big bad powerful corporations are holding it back. The technology is. |
