pirent Communications Licenses Aware's Dr. DSL Diagnostics Software for Integration Into the CopperMax Product Family

BEDFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 1, 2001--Aware, Inc. (NASDAQ: AWRE), a worldwide DSL technology leader and innovator, today announced it has licensed Dr. DSL(R) diagnostics technology to Spirent Communications, for use in its CopperMax family of DSL test units. Dr. DSL-enhanced CopperMax products will enable service providers to perform far-end and in-house physical layer loop diagnostics, DSL DSLAM and customer premises modem emulation, ATM layer testing, and end-to-end IP connectivity.

CopperMax DSL test units combine physical layer tests, central office and customer premises modem emulation, advanced diagnostics interpretation algorithms, and IP connectivity to qualify, provision, and maintain new or existing DSL circuits. By using CopperMax, a service provider can assess link condition in real-time in order to determine the true DSL data rate and service level without requiring a truck roll. CopperMax units can also automatically conduct IP connectivity tests through the DSLAM and ATM network to the internet service provider's authentication server, verifying ATM signaling channel configuration, protocol encapsulation configuration, virtual circuit connectivity, and end-to-end IP connectivity.

"Service providers require advanced diagnostic information to characterize and troubleshoot DSL services. With Dr. DSL-enhanced CopperMax test units as part of an end-to-end solution, service providers can conduct a full suite of advanced diagnostics to test the network from the customer's home to the ATM network, all from one central test location." said Bill Duncan, vice president of marketing for Spirent Communications' Hekimian Division. "Problems can be resolved quickly without affecting customer satisfaction or incurring excessive troubleshooting delays and operational costs."

"Spirent understands that improved loop and network diagnostics translate into faster and less expensive installation, less time on the phone troubleshooting problems, and an overall improvement in a customer's DSL experience," said Peter LeBlanc, Aware's vice president of marketing. "The Dr. DSL-enhanced CopperMax product family is a look at the future of diagnostics testing for DSL."

Spirent will demonstrate CopperMax products at SUPERCOMM 2001 in Atlanta, June 5-7, 2001, in Booth #752. Aware will also demonstrate Dr. DSL in Booth #2110.
