Arafat has never called for extermination of Jews worldwide. Arafat is officially classed as a moderate. He hasn't always been but he is not driving the rebellion today. He is merely uneasily sitting on a political fence. He is in a bad position. He is not cynically holding back on an all out clamp down on the militants. Where would a clamp down that get him?

He knows his constituency and he knows what he has to come back home with in terms of deals. We get the propaganda that the Palestinians had no right to fight in any way. If I were Palestinian, I am not sure what I would have done. To give up land to a Jew is the same as to give it up to a Syrian but the Jew makes a better target as he is not as cruel as the Syrian and besides you can make it religious issue with the Jew. He can be called the Interloper with Western backing to grab cheap Arab oil. You get 800 million pissed off "friends" right away.

I wonder what the Palestinians would do if the gun was at their head from the Iraquis or the Syrians. Would they be so cocky then? Would Britain and the US rush to their aid? Actually they just might, as getting a friend in the Middle east to act as a buffer against Arabic collapse is a good idea.

Let's face it. We were in the ME to grab Arab, Iraqui and Iranian oil (For which, until recently, they Gold paid gold in return, tagging the gold price to the oil price) and to keep a Soviet buffer zone. Britain dropped the Jews into Palestine with a massive Mutt and Jeff game, partitioned and then looked the other way. Much of the land grab was like the Roman empire. Done for the reasons of protection "reluctantly" to avoid future trouble. But like so many of the US's moves overseas did it work to bad ends in the end? Everyone of the US's prop ups in the ME has come back to haunt them. Sadaam Hussein and Ayatollah Khomeini were both CIA trianees. We did not originate terroristic governments in the ME but we trained them to perfection. (Sah Pahlevi).

Actually if the US wanted they could get all their oil from Russian and Canadian tar sands. There is 7 times more oil in the Alberta tar sands than there is in all the ME. (Actual reserve figures) And if you add in heavy Alberta crude and some sources I have seen for the tar sands oil that are not general public knowledge then you have a lot more. You can add Arctic Island gas, Canadian Arctic tar sands, and onshore as well as offshore oil and you have a bunch. None of this has been explored or exploited except for some drilling by Jack Gallagher. I fear with too pliant a Chretien we will undersell it to US oil companies. The liberals have always been too eager to bail the US out with oil.

Ironically it may have been the Canadian sideways drilling that the Kuwaitis used that prompted the Iraquis to attack in the Gulf war.
