well, i see it this way: by way of the imbalance having grown for such a long time, it has been transformed into an intractable problem. it is often said that it would be a good thing for the world if Japan's economy improved...really? if Japan ceases to export its capital, how will this imbalance be financed? has no-one noticed that the US boom/bubble only really got going AFTER that of Japan imploded?

it's well known btw. that economists are generally very good contrary indicators...as long as they were worrying about the imbalances, there was obviously nothing to worry about. now that they have to a man ceased to worry, the time to worry has come.
