Aluminum wiring was popular in the early 70s. Cheaper than copper. The problem was when an aluminum wire was attached to a copper outlet, resistance would build up over time.

I don't know the science but I do know it didn't work and homes burned. I guess that's what counts. My house was built in '76 and I checked the breaker box and it was copper.

Easy way to tell when a house was built. If the bathrooms haven't been remodeled check the underside of the toilet tank lid. The date of manufacture is stamped there.
