Facing Mecca is any direction you wish to choose, if your mind is focussed on God.
That essential immediate experience of what Mohammed underwent on his favorite private mountain ridge where he often stopped in~route to meditate is what Mohammed , in his heart would have you experience too. I suspect he waivered afterwords in sustaining the experience.
So enter Mohammed playing the Moses upon the mountain. Buddha under the Boddhi Tree, their Zorroaster. Every tribe must finally have there messenger from God and so Mohammed succeded in awakening and solidifying an identity of that sense of the divine in those tribes, at last , with his "New" vision . Except the vision was/is not new.
A people/race/tribes that had finally found their own validation/identity and vision of order within a universe of total being at last. In a language, prose, and code of laws they could understand .
It all started with the experience of "enlightenment" of one man alone in the desert . But it is in another way something sensed within all men , of many ages before . Islam and the tribes of Islam were fresh to the idea of this singular Higher Power , and perhaps while other religions languished and lapsed into ennui and stagnated a little, Islam and it's followers totally flashed upon the scene with it's fresh holy visions of salvation and energies with a war cry and will to merge others with Allah or die.
The monstrous events that were to follow in Islam's Jhiads had little to do with that original vision , but greed mixed with a fanaticism of an almost Nordic warrior code of the promise of heaven , some close to Mohammed encouraged . Killing infidels is justified for if they don't convert , they are useless to God anyways ....
This is how man awakens , stage by stage until he arrives back on the doorstep of democracy, where the ultimate test and freedom of ethics and moral choice will test every belief, creed and code, and the individual is finally free to experience his own union with the infinite , just as Mohammed had his ...or I had mine in Yosemite.
It all starts with one man under a Bodhi Tree... or one meditating alone on a desert ridge or high up on the mountain ...but the drama doesn't end with them , ever.
Islam was very exciting while it lasted ,and still is a vital force of thought , but like all religions it tried to can an experience that can't be canned .

PS: Islam ...meaning "Service" , an idea as old as the oldest religion known on earth . In Hinduism called SEVA. Allah is great ...but the experience of Allah is greater. What you call God , is known by many names. |
