I invested in Gemplus International (nasdaq: GEMP) which got mention in the article, shortly after their IPO last fall, and got out a month later with pretty fair profit.

Gemplus the single best smart card play out there.

Fine company ... but at best a prince.

Recent acquisition of Bull's smart card division, by Schlumberger, possibly gives Schlum more market share than Gemplus. Gemplus a pure play. Schlum not.

Problem I saw, though, other than heavily cyclical earnings (30% to 35% of annual) every 4th quarter was that only a small % of the shares available was floated, which means big hunks of privately held shares can hit the market at any time.

Another problem with smart cards is that US lags the world in their useage as the article points out, and consequently the American investor has little awareness.
