(22:00 Saturday) Palestinians break Arafat's cease-fire call

Palestinian forces opened fire this evening on Israeli targets around the Gaza Strip in violation of Palestinian Authority Chairman Yassser Arafat's cease-fire call this afternoon.

Israel has given the PA 24 hours to implement the cease-fire that Arafat declared at a press conference with German Foreign Minister Joschka Fisher and UN Special Envoy Terje Larsen in Ramallah this afternoon.

Palestinian forces opened fire this evening on IDF troops near Netzer Hazani in the Gush Katif region of the Gaza Strip, and on the region's District Coordinating Office.

A Palestinian sniper also opened fire this evening on Israeli targets in the Neveh Dekalim industrial area.

There were no wounded in any of these incidents.

In keeping with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's one-sided cease-fire policy implemented more than 11 days ago, IDF soldiers did not return fire in any of these incidents.

Arafat's cease-fire call went out to all of the PA's security services and was transmitted by Palestinian media to the general population.

The Palestinian leader also declared a state of emergency and warned PA residents to be on alert for Israeli attacks.
