will...i have traded in the amex for about 15 years or so. i agree w/you that as long as sufficient vol is present things can go off w/o a hitch. and actually since decimalization i would have to say execution is better now than before. a lot of it depends on who is handling the specific stock. w/low or no vol things CAN get nasty....but i guess that can be said for almost any exchange. i would suggest using a level 2 type reading to see where the orders are and use limits.
