Trading on the news

Very few things can be as detrimental to your financial health is letting the news make your trades. All too often we will see a news story come out, and traders will read it and come up with an opinion. This is great, or this is terrible and then take a position to reflect this idea. Often times, said trader is more in love with his or her opinion than their money and big losses can occur. The other major danger of trading "on the news" is that the news itself means nothing at all. As short term traders we dont trade news, and in a way we dont even trade stocks, we trade the opinions, biases and emotions of others who are in the market. Often times, bad news will make the best buying opportunities, and good news the best shorts. This occurs because the market is always looking forward. We all know the phrase by the rumor, sell the news.
