CoSine Introduces IPSX 9500 With SHARC Service Generators, the First Multi-Gigabit Rate Solution for Network-based IP Service Delivery CoSine Solution Delivers Processing Power Required for Scaling IP Services To the Speed of Light ATLANTA, SUPERCOMM, Jun 4, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- CoSine Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: COSN chart, msgs), a leading provider of network-based IP service delivery platforms, today introduced a powerful and scalable extension to its product family -- the IPSX 9500(TM) Service Processing Switch equipped with the Scalable High-rate Architecture for Routing and Computing (SHARC(TM)) Service Generators. This combined solution is the first in the industry to offer Service Providers the ability to deliver a new portfolio of revenue-generating IP services that scale to the speed of light.
The IPSX 9500 is a 26-slot, carrier-class solution that marries switching, routing and computing resources with an open software system, the IP Network Operating System (IPNOS(TM)). The SHARC Service Generator is a self-contained subsystem that occupies two Universal slots in the IPSX 9500 chassis. Together, this solution provides unprecedented processing capabilities designed to match the capacity of Service Providers' edge transport build outs. With the IPSX 9500/SHARC solution, Service Providers can bundle network-based, value-added services seamlessly with their high-speed access services.
"As the company that pioneered the network-based IP services market, we have focused our engineering talent and resources all along on evolving the technology and our product line to the next level," said Dean Hamilton, chief executive officer and chairman at CoSine. "By marrying hardware-based forwarding and high-end computing techniques, our SHARC technology has allowed CoSine to create a solution that takes scalability to new heights. We have combined CoSine-originated technology with industry-leading CPUs and accelerators to equip Service Providers with an unprecedented level of service processing scalability. Service Providers need this scalability to deliver an ever-expanding suite of IP services to more and more subscriber networks."
Based on CoSine-proprietary Integrated Circuit (IC) technology, each SHARC Service Generator is essentially a "switch on a Blade" -- providing a higher service processing rate than competing solutions provide in an entire fully loaded chassis. The IPSX 9500 houses up to 12 SHARC Service Generators in a single chassis and is designed to support a wide-range of interfaces including multi-gigabit Ethernet and SONET rates up to OC-48. Each Service Generator can serve tens of thousands of subscriber sites and millions of users as well as their high-speed transactions.
"As large service providers look to accelerate their IP service initiatives, scalability will be a primary requirement. With its SHARC technology, CoSine's IPSX 9500 addresses this requirement by delivering a suite of IP services in a scalable fashion," said Curtis Price, an analyst at Stratecast Partners. "The CoSine platform allows service providers to optimize the investments made in high-speed core technology through support of wire-speed services at the IP edge."
CoSine Technology Delivers Unprecedented Processing Capabilities
The CoSine solution enables Service Providers to realize new revenue streams by providing them with the new hardware-assisted resources needed to offer value-added services profitably at very high data rates. The SHARC Service Generator combines new CoSine technology and industry-leading general purpose processors to enable the delivery of these computationally intense application services such as firewalls, MPLS/IPSec VPNs, Frame Relay integration services, DSL aggregation and more -- at multi-gigabit wire speeds. A SHARC Service Generator includes CoSine's new programmable ICs:
-- Flow Manager -- Provides hardware support for thousands of highly granular QoS flows using programmable Weighted Round Robin (WRR) and Weighted Random Early Detection (WRED) queuing capabilities -- Virtual Routing Processor -- Provides hardware-assisted gigabit rate forwarding support for up to 4,000 Virtual Routers per IC -- Virtual Service Controller -- Provides advanced system memory and packet transfer control for general purpose packet processing -- Security Manager -- Provides hardware-based load-balancing, monitoring and interfacing to an array of cryptographic co-processors -- Service Generator Fabric -- Provides a non-blocking 8-port crossbar switch with a total aggregated throughput of 51.2 Gbps
Each SHARC Service Generator provides general purpose computing horsepower using up to 12 660 MHz PowerPCs processors, each capable of sustaining 1200 MIPS of general purpose processing. The combination of CoSine IC technology and industry-leading general purpose processors enables a fully-loaded IPSX 9500 with SHARC Service Generators to support 40,000 virtual routers, a million IPSec 3DES Security Associations, 450,000 PPPOE DSL sessions, 12 million routes, 150,000 stateful firewall sites (with millions of firewall users) and 500,000 L2TP sessions.
Consolidation of Network Equipment and Reduction of Resources
The IPSX 9500/SHARC system enables Service Provider to realize greater profitability by dramatically reducing capital and operational spending. Because one IPSX 9500 with SHARC Service Generators is capable of supporting hundreds of thousands of enterprise sites, Service Providers can reduce the equipment and human resources required to support IP services. By eliminating the need provide stand-alone pieces of equipment for each subscriber location, Service Providers are also relieved of the management headaches associated with piecing together and managing multiple boxes. Turn up of services is also easier as Service Providers no longer have to wait for lengthy hardware and software installations via a truck roll to begin offering and billing for services.
Powerful New Applications of the IPSX 9500/SHARC
The IPSX 9500/SHARC combination supports all of the application services previously supported by the IP Service Delivery Platform; however, this solution is also ideal for two emerging carrier applications -- Integrated Internet Data Centers (IDCs) and Secure Ethernet Metro Area Networks (MANs). IDCs typically offer enterprises multiple application hosting services -- anything from web/e-commerce to e-mail. These services are currently offered from independent applications hosted on individual servers at an IDC. Service Providers that want to secure these applications would have to deploy an array of costly and cumbersome security appliances in front of each server. With the IPSX 9500, Service Providers can cost-effectively consolidate security functionality in one cost-effective system, providing iron-clad access control for hosted IDC applications.
In emerging Secure Ethernet MAN environments, the CoSine solution enables Service Providers to securely connect a private intranet to the outside world, offering the safeguards needed for public access. These Service Providers can easily deliver multi-gigabit firewall or anti-virus services to users across the metro area. Finally, the IPSX 9500/SHARC provides a variety of secure VPN options for connecting to geographically-dispersed Ethernet MANs, enabling MAN Service Providers to add WAN services to their portfolio.
Investment Protection Through Migration
Service Providers can be assured that the investment in the IPSX 9500/SHARC solution will be protected. The same SHARC Service Generators that fit into the IPSX 9500 are used interchangeably across CoSine's other Service Processing Switch -- the IPSX 3500. Additionally, all of CoSine's existing Service Blades are fully-compatible with the new IPSX 9500 chassis.
Pricing and Availability
The CoSine IPSX 9500 with the SHARC Service Generator is available in September of this year for under $150,000.
