ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 4, 2001--

New RS 16000 Router Delivers 88 Percent More Gigabit Ethernet Density
Than The Industry's Previous Benchmark

Riverstone Networks, Inc., (Nasdaq:RSTN.Q) a leader in service
creation infrastructure for metropolitan area networks, today
announced the RS 16000 Gigabit aggregation router, a new chassis-based
platform designed specifically for the needs of the fast-growing
Gigabit and 10-Gigabit Ethernet market. The wire-speed RS 16000 offers
industry-leading Gigabit Ethernet port density and supports 10-Gigabit
and CWDM uplinks. Designed for the Point of Presence (POP) and the
data center, it provides industry-leading service creation
capabilities with Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) for metro
VPNs, virtual leased lines, and transparent LAN services. Bettering
the previous industry benchmark by more than 88 percent, the RS 16000
delivers best in class Gigabit Ethernet density and offers service
providers unprecedented opportunities to generate revenue and save on
operational costs.
"We listened to our customers and built exactly the Gigabit
Ethernet aggregation router they wanted," said Romulus Pereira, CEO of
Riverstone Networks. "The RS 16000 platform breaks new ground in port
density, performance, number of services supported, provisioning ease,
and reduction of operating expenses--while providing the massive
Gigabit density and 10 Gigabit uplinks required for the next
generation metro market."
"When Riverstone began designing the new RS 16000 platform, they
started by talking to network providers like us," said Carlo Lalomia,
chief technology officer of IntelliSpace. "The Riverstone team worked
closely with our operations personnel to understand all the issues we
face deploying Gigabit Ethernet solutions, and what we needed to
improve profitability. Because Riverstone is focused exclusively on
the metro service provider market, they were able to quickly meet our
needs."
Metro serviceproviders anticipate an explosion in Gigabit
Ethernet deployments, with Gigabit Ethernet port shipments expected to
grow at a compound annual rate of 108 percent to 2005 (Dell'Oro
Group). The RS 16000's high port density enables metro service
providers to offer Gigabit Ethernet services to many more customers
with lower space and management costs. The RS 16000 supports 12 ports
per rack unit, or 540 ports per 7-foot rack, redefining the revenue
metrics for Gigabit Ethernet. Furthermore, the modular design allows
capital expenditures to grow as the business grows. The RS 16000 can
be deployed with as few as four Gigabit Ethernet ports and can scale
up to 60 wire-speed Gigabit Ethernet port capacity. It will also
support up to three 10 Gigabit uplinks.
"Leveraging Gigabit Ethernet, we can typically provide twice the
bandwidth at half the cost of traditional solutions," said John Kane,
chief executive officer of Telseon. "To realize this goal, we need
equipment like Riverstone's routers that are as flexible and reliable
as Ethernet itself. We chose the RS 16000 because it gives us the
density we need to maximize the performance of our Gigabit Ethernet
services and IP networks."

The Cornerstone of Riverstone's 10 Gigabit Ethernet Strategy

The RS 16000 is the cornerstone of Riverstone's 10 Gigabit
Ethernet strategy, and is expressly designed for the 10 Gigabit
Ethernet metro networks of the future. Riverstone will equip the 16000
with Riverstone's unique MPLS-enabled 10 Gigabit Ethernet modules,
which allow services to be extended across the massive bandwidth
provided by 10 Gigabit links. The RS 16000, as Riverstone's
foundational 10 Gigabit Ethernet product, drives Riverstone's vision
of a service-centered metro running on IP/MPLS/10 Gigabit Ethernet
networks.

"Bandwidth with Brains" Drives Profitable Services

This newest addition to Riverstone's RS line of routers integrates
with the company's existing products to extend metro services to the
core and to scale service delivery within the metro. In addition to
its unrivaled Gigabit Ethernet port density, the RS 16000 offers the
following key advantages:

-- The RS 16000 supports cutting-edge services, including
hardware-based, field-programmable MPLS; rate limiting for up
to 2048 customers per line card; and tier-1 approved Open
Shortest Path First (OSPF), Border Gateway Protocol 4 (BGP-4),
and Intermediate System to Intermediate System (IS-IS) routing
with established Cisco and Juniper interoperability.

-- The RS 16000 comes with 8 Gigabit Ethernet over Coarse
Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) modules to provide
uplinks to the metro or Internet core, and will support 10
Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet over WDM once the
standard is finalized. The massive scalability and uplink
capacity of the RS 16000 reduces fiber costs and speculative
network buildout expenses.

-- The RS 16000 is designed for maximum resiliency, redundancy,
and scalability at one of the most demanding points in a
service provider's network.

"Metro networks have become ground zero for service creation and
delivery," said Ron Westfall, principal analyst at Current Analysis.
"Service providers need optical aggregation equipment that can
cost-effectively scale to meet this burgeoning demand while also
supporting the latest technology. Riverstone's RS 16000 is
purpose-built for metro service providers who need high Gigabit
Ethernet port densities to maximize ROI and MPLS functionality, but
don't have the space to accommodate bulky deployments. Riverstone
continues to execute on product development efforts that meet the
evolving requirements of the metro market."

Metro-Optimized MPLS

The RS 16000 supports Riverstone's metro-optimized MPLS
implementation, enabling service providers to offer such
revenue-generating services as metro VPNs, VirtualLeased Lines
(VLLs), and transparent LAN services. In addition, the RS 16000
incorporates Riverstone's leading hardware-based accountability and
control features, allowing service providers to achieve better network
management and usage-based billing. To attain maximum network uptime,
the router combines redundant hardware with standards-based Virtual
Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) and self-healing route paths.
