It is a cultural belief that to die as a martyr is the greatest honor one can achieve in a lifetime.

I have studies Koran and although would be the first one to confess that I'm no expert by any means, I can tell you that definition of a martyr is not killing innocent kids or babies.

In the war between Iran and Iraq, young Iranian kids were sent to the frontline in order to clear the path from mines. They were given "keys" to hang around their necks in case they were blown into pieces and would go to heaven as "martyrs".

That's not "martyrdom", it's called brain washing by their political and spiritual leaders.
