"I meant earthly leaders--the politicians. If they would just acknowledge that religion is personal, our democracies would have one less strain and we could all interact with our deities, or not, in peace.

There are instructions in the three Semitic religions on how to deal with government, and what the government can and can't do to them. You assume naturally that an elected government is better than an imposed religion. Most times you would be right but not always. The Germans elected at one time in their history one of the most evil men that ever walked the face of the earth and it can happen again.

Those governments that you called "our democracies" are not always democratic, sometimes they are monarchy, sometimes they are another type of religion like communism.

Pontius Pilate a leader appointed by the Romans put Jesus on the cross based on the instigation of the Jewish faction. Religion and politics are twined. The people that founded the USA were Christian and Christianity and the USA are twined like it or not.

"...interact with our dieties, or not, in peace."
Peace is what we all strive for but most advances in science and living came from techniques developed through war. Many wars were based on differences of opinion about religion.
