Les-

It breaks down like this:

72% of these workers are adults (age 20 and older)

(That's period. Nearly three-quarters are adult.)

59.2% are female.

(That's period too.)

What I said was, "Just tack on "head of household" to a good portion of that 59.2% female and you'll have a clearer picture of what this looks like," again trying to dispell the myth that these people are teenagers without dependents. I never "claimed that as totally representative of that group."

>>>I've seen 40% on other reports as single.<<<

Fine. Serve them up. We can play battling surverys. You got my url on this a few days ago.

>>>Your statistics also fail to distinguish seniors and people on work leave from institutions from your adult sample group, some of whom are not supporting children. Have fun with tacking on a descriptor to that group that works for your argument.<<<

And some of them are seniors supporting children in ever growing numbers. The number of children dependent on grandparents has mushroomed.

--6% of US children under 18 (3.9 million) live in grandparent-headed households (US Census 1997)

--1.3 million children have no parent present in the grandparent-headed household

--there are grandparent-headed households in every socioeconomic and ethnic group

The above is from AARP.

The url below paints an even bleaker picture.

ag.ohio-state.edu

About 670,000 children across the United States live in their grandmother's home with neither their grandfather nor their parents present. About two-thirds of these children are poor. The overall poverty rate for children living in a grandparent's home is 27 percent; for children living in their parents' home, it is 19 percent.

and

With respect to one-third of the children who live in a grandparent's home, the grandparent(s) lacks a high school diploma. In contrast, only one-eighth of children residing in their parents' homes can say the same thing about their parent(s).

I wonder what kind of jobs those grandparents who don't have high-school diplomas are elligble for if they have to return to work to cope with the new financial burden?
