Compaq Delivers First PCI-X-Enabled Server for Enterprise ProLiant Customers; New 8-Way ProLiant DL760 and ML750 Servers Launched

HOUSTON, June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE: CPQ - news) today announced that the new ProLiant(TM) DL760 is the first server to fully support high-speed PCI-X I/O technology for the Profusion chipset architecture. The ProLiant DL760 is one of two new 8-way ProLiant server models featuring Intel® Pentium® III Xeon(TM) processors, which will now be incorporated into the ProLiant ML and DL line of servers. The next-generation ProLiant 8000 will be introduced as the ProLiant ML750, and the successor to the ProLiant 8500 will be offered as the ProLiant DL760 with 700MHz models available immediately and 900MHz models shipping commensurate with processor availability from Intel.

``Compaq earned greater than 60% market share leadership with ProLiant servers in the 8-way arena by driving innovation that gives enterprise customers a distinct advantage,'' said James Mouton, vice president of enterprise servers, Industry Standard Server Group, Compaq. ``Pioneering innovation, such as developing the premiere PCI-X platform for the industry, protecting customer investment with simplified 'drawer' upgrades, and driving optimal scalability, high availability, and manageability features, keep our customers on the cutting-edge of industry-standard computing.''

PCI-X Technology Yields Performance and Flexibility

The PCI-X technology that will be available to customers in the ProLiant DL760 and available as an I/O drawer upgrade to existing ProLiant 8500 customers, was developed by Compaq for the Profusion chipset architecture and is also being licensed by Compaq to other technology manufacturers in the industry. Compaq's customer-driven engineering investment in both Profusion and 64-bit PCI-X architectures ensure that customers receive the best possible I/O performance for bandwidth intensive applications using Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, Ultra3 SCSI, or Cluster Interconnects.

PCI-X provides customers investment protection, with backward compatibility for existing PCI-based systems, and a stable and complementary technology roadmap for future I/O standard system architectures. PCI-X offers both added performance and flexibility and enables enterprise customers to use multiple PCI-X buses at different speeds, adding ultra-high performance and hot-pluggability, for sophisticated computing environments. Details on the PCI-X technology are available at: www.compaq.com/PCI-X.

ProLiant Servers Set World-Record Reliability and Scalability Benchmarks

The ProLiant DL760 returned superior reliability and scalability results in benchmark testing for both PeopleSoft and J.D. Edwards applications. The results demonstrated the continued ability of ProLiant 8-way servers to scale to meet the performance and reliability needs of customers' business-critical applications. Running Windows 2000 Advanced Server for both benchmarks, Compaq produced a world-record simulation of 30,000 users performing PeopleSoft 8 Call Center, Sales Force Automation, Field Service and Interaction Management transactions. Compaq also achieved a J.D. Edwards e-Fulfillment benchmark result of 421,723 sales order line items per hour with J.D. Edwards OneWorld® XE software on a 3-tier Compaq ProLiant server platform, demonstrating the power and flexibility of the environment.
