Fonix to Provide Voice Solutions on Motorola mobileGT(TM) Technology Fonix(R) and Motorola Driver Information Systems Sign Memorandum Of Understanding to Incorporate Fonix ASR and TTS SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Jun 4, 2001 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Fonix(R) Corporation (OTC Bulletin Board: FONX chart, msgs) and Motorola's Driver Information Systems (DIS) Operation have entered into a strategic relationship to incorporate Fonix automatic speech recognition (ASR) and text-to-speech (TTS) solutions into in-car computing. Fonix has been invited to join Motorola's mobileGT(TM) Alliance to implement and promote Fonix speech solutions for automotive applications, where Motorola DIS enjoys industry market leadership. Fonix has successfully completed the integration of its proprietary ASR and TTS solutions to the PowerPC(TM) 823e-based mobileGT(TM) architecture.
"Fonix provides excellent voice recognition to the mobileGT(TM) development environment," said Ron Huff, Motorola's Driver Information Systems Operations Manager. "Our customers are demanding reliable ASR capability, and Fonix has the technology and the vision to deliver this significant DIS application. Speech recognition is rapidly becoming a value-added technology and solution in the automotive marketplace."
Fonix now joins a consortium of companies providing state-of-the-art automotive applications under the mobileGT(TM) alliance. Using the PowerPC 823e and subsequent versions, this collaboration ushers in a new era of host- based speech applications, thus eliminating the need for use of a DSP. Running on the host processor, speech applications can now scale to much larger vocabularies and increased DIS complexities and functionality including auto navigation systems, Bluetooth applications, and voice Internet browsing. Fonix publicly demonstrated its full integration of ASR and TTS applications with Motorola DIS on the mobileGT(TM) architecture at the recent ESC2001West Exhibition in San Francisco in early April 2001, and also at Motorola's HORIZONS 2001 Automotive Technology Day in Detroit in early May 2001.
"The mobileGT(TM) architecture development platform provides a user- friendly environment for us to port, develop, and deploy our automotive speech applications," stated David Nelson, Fonix Automotive Industry Marketing Director. "With auto manufacturers worldwide rapidly testing speech applications for broad use in multiple models, highly-accurate and cost- effective solutions are required. Integrating Fonix speech applications in the impressive mobileGT(TM) Alliance of automotive DIS technologies provides precisely what the automotive market is demanding."
The mobileGT(TM) Standard Development Platform, utilized by Fonix to demonstrate its ASR and its human-quality TTS technologies, offers the advantages of increased in-car safety and reduced development time. Fonix advantages of a small memory footprint, low power utilization (MIPS) for the noise-tolerant automotive environment, and user-friendly command-and-control functions provide enhanced access to technology and application to the driver in the expanding market of information and performance.
