In 1934, the average US hourly wage for nonsupervisory goods-producing workers on a non-farm payroll was 54.8 cents an hour. In May, 2001, it was $15.86 per hour. So in 1934, the average US worker could buy an ounce of gold with about 64 hours work. In 2001, it only takes about 17 hours.
