The emotional pressure usually forces them to trap themselves, for to them it is only a matter of being smart enough--just a bit smarter. I'm thinking of the episode where they remove the gun used by the killer from the elevator ceiling and replace it with a duplicate. Then they photograph everything before and after her getting on and off. The fake gun then being missing, and only the killer knowing where the gun had been hidden, well...

If she had left well enough alone, they could not have tied HER to the gun--at least not in that fashion. But Columbo knows how to bring out their worse doubts and fears--and they end up trying to hard.

I used to like "the Equalizer," too. It was good to see a hero that could truly help the little person because he was able to break the "rules" and thus operate on an equal footing with the oppressors and criminals of the world. All very simplistic stuff--not necessarily the full range of my dramatic appreciation... :)
