TEL AVIV, June 4 (Reuters) - The Israeli branch of U.S.
technology and telecoms consulting firm Gartner Group said on
Monday it postponed indefinitely its annual international
conference scheduled for next week in Tel Aviv due to security
concerns.
Gartner Israel said 900 people had been expected to attend
the information technology conference, including analysts from
Gartner in the United States, and officials from firms such as
Microsoft <MSFT.O> and Oracle <ORCL.O>.
The company said virtually no one cancelled despite a more
than eight month Palestinian uprising and a recent wave of
deadly suicide bombings, but insuring the attendees posed a
problem.
Foreign insurance companies, adhering to a U.S. State
Department ban on travel to the region, were unwilling to insure
conference attendees, said Baruch Gindin, president of Gartner's
Mediterranean operations.
"We postponed it to another date because of the issue of
insurance coverage," Gindin said.
He noted that it was not just potential security problems
but also participants would not be covered if hit by a car, for
example.
Gindin said Gartner took a significant financial loss from
the postponement, since the Israeli conference is the largest
Gartner regional event.
He hoped the conference would be rescheduled for later this
year.
In the most recent attack, a Palestinian suicide bomber
killed 20 Israelis -- mostly teenagers -- at a Tel Aviv
nightclub on Friday night.
