lisa, as a supervisor or manager for the last 7 years, i can tell you that you are right. it isn't so much money, it is respect. people want to feel valued, they want to work for folks who will give them honesty, a fair shake and opportunity. i hold work in high regard, regardless of what it is.

having high expectations for folks you hold in high esteem can lead to excellent results - and fun, too. not for everyone as some folks are negative by nature. but i don't manage to the lowest common denominator. rather, i manage to the highest and address the lowest on a case by case basis.

it is a competitive advantage that few people have. yes, common decency and respect toward others is a competitive advantage in the managerial world.

make sure when your time comes that you treat people as you would want to be treated if you were in their position. people recognize this and will be extremely loyal toward you.
