>>At the same time, your enthusiasm as a "positive" manager may take a hit when tough decisions have to be made. Some times you cannot treat those folks as you would like to be treated. Just business, and that can be difficult.<<

pearly, you are talking to a guy who has worked for companies that have averaged about 10 layoffs over the last 3 years. i know what you mean. layoffs, firings and promotions (when there aren't enough positions for qualified, great people) are very difficult times.

however, i can't control a lot of that. ultimately, the market does. what i can do is treat people with dignity and respect and help them develop their skill set so that they become more employable - no matter what happens with their current company.

sure, it hurts to see so many people hit the road so often. some find better jobs, some don't. far too often, i've seen managers depersonalize employees so that layoffs are "easier to take" - for the manager no less!

i owe it the people who support me to treat them right while i can. i try to do just that. i'm not perfect, for sure. but folks do tend to like working with me to achieve some pretty good results and have some fun at the same time.
