Just yesterday I made a posting to another thread about a huge "capital-intensive" new mine. The posting throws light on the subject of leverage to metal prices; what a fantastic investment the mine will be if metal prices rise, and how dismal it will be if metal prices fall.
Unfortunately it is very difficult for the market to evaluate volatility to determine a fair value today. I believe that todays market prices of the mines owners (Teck and Noranda) barely affords any value beyond cost. Although both stocks have seen good increases I believe they are both trading below book value.
