Pegaso-Telefonica Talks Limited To Roaming Deal

Infolatina via NewsEdge Corporation : MEXICO CITY, Jun 4, 2001 (Reforma/Infolatina via COMTEX) -- Spanish-owned Telefonica Moviles (NYSE:TEM) is not in talks to acquire Mexican mobile carrier Pegaso, according to a report in Mexico City daily Reforma. Telecom industry observers in Mexico said a series of agreements between Pegaso and U.S.-based long-distance carrier Sprint Corp. (NYSE:PCS), which owns a minority stake in the company, made any potential deal with Telefonica Moviles extremely unlikely, Reforma business columnist Dario Celis Estrada reported. Pegaso-Sprint agreements reportedly range from management contracts through acquisition preference rights. Rather than an acquisition, what Pegaso and Telefonica currently are negotiating is a roaming agreement in the areas served by Telefonica subsidiaries Movitel, Bajacel, Norcel and Cedetel, in northern Mexico, Celis reported.
