BRIDGEWATER, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE) via NewsEdge Corporation -- ViaGate Technologies Inc., announced a major breakthrough with the successful delivery of High Definition Television (HDTV) over an existing fiber network through its ViaGate 4160 Access Switch utilizing standard copper telephone wires.

ViaGate, in conjunction with CompleteTV and Artel Video Systems, has introduced this potential service, the first of its kind, to complement a host of broadband entertainment and connectivity services that are being field tested in Tennessee.

The trial is being conducted with the DTC Communications in Alexandria, Tennessee over the IRIS network, an OC-48 SONET ring that connects eleven independent telephone companies in Tennessee. Network television content is being offered via CompleteTV, an emerging provider of comprehensive broadband material and delivery solutions, based in Nashville, Tennessee.

The content has been delivered through Artel Video Systems' CopperTV(TM) video access Multiplexer. Artel, a world-class supplier of video networking systems to telecommunications service providers, is based in Marlborough, Massachusetts. The three companies have partnered to debut this HDTV solution to consumers utilizing their existing phone lines.

ViaGate designs, develops, and distributes Very high-speed Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL) access products that enable communications service providers to leverage their existing copper infrastructure to deliver full service broadband solutions.

These solutions currently include simultaneous digital broadcast television, video-on-demand (VOD), high-speed Internet, and telephony to the subscriber. ViaGate's intelligent VDSL products also open the door to a variety of additional interactive multimedia digital services such as "T-commerce," interactive gaming, and targeted video advertising.

"It is very exciting for us to work with Artel and ViaGate, at the forefront of delivering high definition TV, particularly via telephone infrastructure," said CompleteTV's president and CEO, Jerry Gardner. "CompleteTV strives to provide the most robust broadband entertainment and television service to the consumer."

Artel Video Systems continues to be committed to transporting innovative video services over broadband and fiber optic networks and providing TV viewers the opportunity to experience the most current technological advances. "We are thrilled to build on our relationship with ViaGate to facilitate them distribution of broadcast TV, including HDTV, over their high-speed VDSL platform," said Hal Charnely, president and CEO of Artel.

"With this breakthrough, subscribers will now be able to enjoy HDTV programming, which is twice the vertical and horizontal resolution of current analog broadcasting, with sound quality approaching that of a CD (compact disc)," said Brian Chen, CTO and founder of ViaGate. "With the growing popularity of HDTV programming by the networks, HDTV is becoming the killer application for digital services. ViaGate's VDSL platform not only delivers HDTV over a single copper phone line, it still provides enough bandwidth for additional channels of video, high-speed Internet access, as well as voice telephony and other services."

ViaGate's focus on delivering high-value solutions that service providers can offer to consumers is propelling the broadband access industry. Upon completion of ViaGate's trial, service providers like DTC will be able to effectively evaluate and implement strategic state-of-the-art broadband entertainment solutions to satisfy consumer bandwidth demand.

The delivery of broadcast HDTV over VDSL to subscribers in the service provider's area will prove to be another competitive advantage over existing cable operators and overbuilders.

This HDTV trial is the third significant announcement for ViaGate following a beta launch in April and the general availability of its VDSL platform in May. ViaGate continues to make broadband access solutions available to telco service providers through its tested products and strategic partnerships.

Artel, booth no. 8012 and ViaGate, booth no. 5548, and CompleteTV will demonstrate their joint solution at SUPERCOMM 2001, June 5-7th in Atlanta, Georgia.
