NHC Announces Fully Integrated Remote Cabinet Solution - Copper Cross-Connect Featured in New Integrated
Remote Cabinet - Curbside(TM)

MONTREAL, June 5 /CNW/ - NHC Communications Inc. (TSE:NHC), a leading
provider of carrier class test access and deployment solutions for the copper-
based telecommunications and Internet access markets, announced today a
revolutionary fully integrated remote cabinet for deploying voice and data
services called Curbside(TM). The announcement was made at SuperComm 2001, a
leading telecommunications industry trade show.
Using NHC's remote copper cross connect technology, Curbside(TM) can
quickly provision customers, enabling Local Exchange Carriers (LECs) to
significantly improve customer service levels and reduce operating costs. By
integrating selected technologies from leading telecommunications vendors, NHC
is able to offer the Curbside(TM) cabinet as a complete customized kit. The
kit includes all the equipment LECs require for deploying POTS, T1/E1, xDSL,
ISDN and wireless equipment, such as digital subscriber line access
multiplexers (DSLAMs) and test access equipment for loop qualification.
Various sizes and component configurations are also available.
"Remote cabinets are essential to the extension of digital subscriber
line (DSL) services beyond the limit of central office locations in urban
centres. There are more than 100,000 locations for remote cabinets in the
United States alone," said Sylvain Abitbol, President and CEO of NHC
Communications. "We believe there is a need to enable mass deployment of DSL
in every neighborhood globally. Curbside(TM) answers this need by offering
custom-built, fully integrated outdoor cabinets to LECs."
Compared to passive remote cabinets, which require a truck roll to
provision and effect line changes, Curbside(TM) offers LECs flexibile and
timely access to their customers' lines. Curbside(TM) provides totally remote
provisioning with an infrastructure that enables service providers to
implement completely automated flow-through provisioning.
NHCs ControlPoint(TM), the remotely controlled robotic copper cross
connect system used in Curbside(TM), has been provisioning voice and data
applications for over eight years. Just as a main distribution frame (MDF)
facilitates cross connects, ControlPoint(TM) is a remote automatic MDF. This
simple and rugged system is controlled by Windows-based software at the
network-operating center (NOC) and communicates over a LAN/WAN. To date,
ControlPoint(TM) has been proven to be compatible with all DSLAM and testing
equipment available today.
"NHC is focused on product innovations and customer satisfaction,
specifically in the area of any-to-any cross connect capability," said NHC's
Chief Technology Officer, Tom Super. "With the addition of Curbside(TM), all
of our customers will have access to a complete end-to-end solution to meet
and exceed their outdoor requirements."
