In high drain applications, NiMH batteries are far better than alkaline cells -- and other rechargeable batteries as well. But, for such things as TV remotes, alkaline batteries are better as they have low leakage currents; and there is little to be gained by using rechargeables where alkalines last for a year or more.

While NiMH batteries have recently improved quite a bit in leakage, they should be re-charged every month or so. NiMH batteries can be charged rapidly, if you buy a "smart" charger that throttles the charging current as the battery approaches full charge.
