Avici and Ciena Demonstrate Dynamic Bandwidth Provisioning Across Intelligent Optical Network ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 5, 2001-- Enable Service Providers to Eliminate Bandwidth Inefficiencies and Deliver New Differentiated Services
Avici Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:AVCI), a leading provider of scalable core routing solutions for intelligent-IP-over optical networks, today announced an industry milestone by demonstrating dynamic bandwidth provisioning between its TSR(R) scalable core router and intelligent optical switches from CIENA, enabling carriers to optimize capacity provisioning across the optical Internet to help eliminate bandwidth inefficiencies and deliver new differentiated services to customers.
The demonstration couples Avici's TSR(R) scalable core router with the intelligence of CIENA's MultiWave CoreDirector(TM) CI, using the Optical Internetworking Forum's (OIF) User Network Interface (UNI) signaling. This live event will take place at SUPERCOMM 2001 from June 5 -7, at Avici's booth, # 4856.
Increasing demand to support new services is driving service providers to deploy more customized and higher capacity connections across the network. In this demonstration, Avici's unique bandwidth provisioning capability, Composite Links(TM), along with CIENA's CoreDirector(TM) CI, illustrate how customized, higher-bandwidth capacities can be quickly provisioned to support new service requirements while management of that capacity is simplified, reducing a service provider's operational and capital expenses.
OIF UNI is an open signaling initiative, which enables dynamic, customized, bandwidth provisioning across an IP and optical network. CIENA and Avici are also participating in the OIF's interoperability demonstration with 23 other vendors, at SUPERCOMM in the OIF booth, # 150D in the Georgia Dome. By using UNI signaling, carriers can establish connections dynamically across multi-vendor networks rather than relying on lengthy, manual provisioning processes, reducing operating costs and expanding service options for end-users.
Steve Kaufman, president and COO of Avici Systems said, "By combining CIENA's proven experience in building carrier-class intelligent optical networks and Avici's expertise in carrier-class scalable core routing, the industry is getting a glimpse of one of the most innovative solutions for carriers. This public demonstration further validates Avici's commitment to providing its customers with what they need -- the most reliable, open, and scalable IP backbone solution -- designed to unlock the power of the optical layer."
"Standards-based signaling is an important step toward realizing CIENA's vision of the Intelligent Optical Internet," said Steve Alexander, CIENA's chief technology officer. "We envision a seamless, interoperable network of high-speed, high-capacity routers, transport systems, optical switches and software that can dynamically self-provision any amount of bandwidth anytime according to immediate customer needs. The ability to leverage multi-vendor intelligence across IP and optical core networks enhances service providers' ability to broaden their service portfolio offerings while driving down operations costs."
