I had a real eye opening experience visiting a Chippewa reservation in Minnesota last fall. I'm part Chippewa, but have had no contact at all with any Chippewa because my great-grandfather didn't want anyone to know that his wife was part Indian, so forced her to cut all ties with her family. We went to a museum on the rez, and I was appalled at what appeared to me to be wallowing in self-pity about things that happened generations ago. It's done, it's over, move on. I can say that easily because I am part white and part Indian, so I think it's crazy for the Indian part of me to blame the white part of me for things that I never did. It would be schizoid, no? Same thing with Germany and the Holocaust - the people in charge in Germany today didn't kill Jews. My husband's family were in Germany during the war. My husband's uncle was in the Luftwaffe and died in the Battle of Stalingrad. Should my husband apologize? He's never been to Germany. His father fought on the American side. How about my children? Where does it end? Blaming the dead is a waste of time. The living are not responsible for the acts of the dead, and it's counterproductive to make them apologize for things they didn't do. I know it's fashionable, but I don't believe in blood guilt.
