We attended the Vodafone analyst breakfast today in New York with Chief Executive Chris Gent. Vodafone stated that Verizon will eventually choose W-CDMA as its 3G technology choice over cdma2000. This was a big surprise. Vodafone believes that it has to have a single network worldwide for roaming as well providing Vodafone/Verizon scale efficiencies in purchasing equipment. While the impact of this is likely not to be felt until the 2003-2004 timeframe, it is a negative for Qualcomm. Vodafone confirmed that they met last week with Nokia chairman Jorma Ollila and Nokia is on schedule with delivery of its GPRS handsets for initial units in Q3 and volume in Q4. Vodafone believes that 25% of handsets sold in Q4 will be GPRS handsets. This is in-line with our worldwide estimate of 20-30 million GPRS handsets sold in 2001. The company is sticking with its CAPEX projections of approximately 5 Billion Pounds in 2001 and 2002, a positive sign for the market overall market considering Vodafone is the world's largest wireless carrier.
