We attended the Vodafone analyst breakfast today in New York with Chief Executive Chris Gent. Vodafone stated that Verizon will eventually choose W-CDMA as its 3G technology choice over cdma2000. This was a big surprise. Vodafone believes that it has to have a single network worldwide for roaming as well providing Vodafone/Verizon scale efficiencies in purchasing equipment. I think I'll probably need a little more than that....Verizon has been indicating for a while that it will consider W-CDMA after it builds out its 1xrtt network. OTOH....with the various comments that have come out of Vodafone/Nokia over the last couple of months it wouldnt surprise me if they eventually decided to do some rollout of W-CDMA. The two problems with this would be spectrum availability and the commercial availability of W-CDMA equipment. The European operators seem to keep pushing back the expected availabilty of W-CDMA services. That's ok in a market in which there is no competition from CDMA2000....but that obviously wont be the case in the US. I stated it on one of the Qualcomm boards....a selection of W-CDMA by Verizon would indicate availabilty by early '03. That's an easy trade for me to make.... Slacker
