The flex side of COMS, and other evil forces:

Beachside Bill says, "Remember COMS is on the flex side with everyone else as a standard."

Well, it was probably handy for USR to have COMS people inside the K56 consortium... sort of like the "American interests section" of the Swiss Embassy in Tehran.

But, everything I've heard from COMS lately is moving toward a much more middle ground. Consider that COMS has existing product which has got Rockwell chips on it, and can be easily upgraded using Rockwell. People who've been around USRX for a while remember how long Megahertz PCMCIA modem cards were built with Rockwell chips after they were bought by USR.

As for the standard, anyone with any sense knows that neither X2 nor K56flex are going to be the final standard. But USR has promised upgrades from X2 to the standard, when it's finally agreed upon. In the mean time, if you want to make a connection faster than 33600 baud, you'd better buy an X2 modem, because if you've got a K56 modem, you can't find anywhere to connect to! The PC Mag article that Beachside Bill referred to says they couldn't test K56 because there wasn't anywhere to connect to yet!
