The road is long and hot,

shimmering in the haze of

heat coming off the tarmac,

in the distance something dark

flickers and wavers

like a black flame, soundless.

It gets larger, closer,

takes shape as a faint thunder

startles the jackrabbits.

Soon it is a bike,

with rider and passenger

watching the road,

the sky and the scenery,

the thunder

becomes a louder rumble

and is upon you -

and then gone, the sound fading

as silence returns.
