"it is mandatory to offer Registered Memory with ECC"...
for SERVERS. You conveniently forgot this qualifier.

In terms of volume, desktops are definitely "mainstream",
and therefore Carl is correct that it is nonsense to
compare server memories with desktop memories.

As for AMD chipsets, the 761 chip supports both
unbuffered and registered DDR DIMMs. The 762 chip,
the dual-processor one, claims to support only
registered DIMMs. However, there is a control
bit that must be set for "registered" memory.
Apparently the chip LOGICALLY supports both
types, but AMD could not figure out how to make
their boards to work with both types. Keep also
in mind that AMD is not the best authority in
making good memory controllers.
