Maybe criminals were cruel to their pets... we don't really know... but, on the question of dogs and civilization, I think our current civilization would not be as advanced as it is right now if it were not for our canine friends... our earliest ancestors discontinued the nomadic ways and settled down to an agricultural society largely due to our inability to hunt as well and to protect ourselves against predators that preyed on wandering humans... from the earliest times, we befriended the wolf as a family member and the wolf guarded our perimeter against those predators... the "red neck" comment mentioned earlier about keeping the dog outside the house is still testimony to that same primitive relationship... and in return, we cared for, raised, and fed, and loved the canine and our relationship hasn't really changed in all these thousands of years... oh sure, technologies have changed, but the fundamental relationship between humans and dogs have not... without our close and binding ties with the canine, we may not even be here today..... well, that's my two cents.....
