Re: "may be a tacit admission that P4 2 GHz won't arrive until 0.13u in late Q4."

Fear not !!

According to xBIT, 0.18 micron Pentium 4's - at 2 GHz - should be arriving in time for your back-to-school-purchases !!

Intel Sending Northwood Samples to Mainboard Makers [1:49 am] Gavric
The following 0.13-micron Pentium 4 is awaited only in the fourth quarter, but Intel has already sent Northwood samples to the leading mainboard manufacturers, EBN writes. Intel was ready with its 0.13-micron Pentium 4 samples six weeks ago. This indicates that Intel has no problems introducing the 0.13-micron technology.
The manufacturers need Pentium 4 (Northwood) samples to check the performance of their Brookdale products which are massively demonstrated these days at Computex. Although the first processors designed for Socket478 – the one towards which i845 mainboards are oriented – will be built on the old Willamette core, the manufacturers have to make sure that the Northwood core will cause no troubles with the boards.

The debut of Socket478 processors will occur in August starting with 2GHz. That’s when the first 2GHz Socket478 0.18-micron Pentium 4 should come to life. In Q4 the Socket 478 Pentium 4 family will be joined by a 2GHz model based on 0.13-micron Northwood core. For a photo of this sample, please, go here.
