No one is going to hand you a secularized society. Compete in the marketplace of ideas or not, as you choose. As long as people have beliefs, they will act upon them. While we recognize limits to their freedom of action, a free society construes those limits broadly. That is the condition of peace upon which this nation was founded. Let the Amish be Amish; let the the Evangelical hold their revivals; let the Unitarian disavow most Christian traditions; let the secular form their Ethical Culture Societies. Freedom of conscience means just that, that within broad limits, we are able to act on our beliefs as we think best.
