Perhaps I was instinctively dismissive, because it goes so against the grain of my experience

I'm not picking on you. I'm talking about the tone and tenor of our society. We all live in our little subcultures so a cry from someone outside of it will always go against the grain of our experience or at least be outside our experience. We don't necessarily need to walk a mile in everyone's moccasins, we don't need to cater to every whim of every misfit, but we need to at least acknowledge our fellows--instinctively, quickly, respectfully.

IMO, it's the moral thing to do. If not that, then it's the practical thing to do. If we were just a little nicer to each other, we'd have fewer lawsuits and fewer crazed gunmen.

Acknowledging people's humanity is not a slippery slope to reparations for bruised feelings. Hopefully, it stunts the development of bullying behaviors and makes life a little better for everyone.
