Uh, DAK uh, let's go back a bit.

Les came to this conclusion that since half of the would-be beneficiaries of a minimum wage increase work full-time (48.2%) and another third (32.9%) work between 20 and 34 hours per week that the third "are likely not relying on the wages for supporting families, of which many are living at home with parents while attending school." (quotations his remarks.)

A suppostition on his part. He doesn't know the age of those 32.9% of part time workers.

I countered that the third were not necessarily living at home while attending school. If he checked the numbers he'd see that 72% (closer to three fourths) of minimum wage workers are in fact adults (age 20 and older.) I assume if they are that age (20+) and working a minimum wage job they could likely not be students. So I come up with only a solid fourth who are likely students.

Another thing Les didn't consider is just because a worker is counted as working part time does not mean they are not responsible for minor dependent children. There is a very different reality out there for young adults than many on this thread aren't familiar with because we tend to be upper middle class as a group. It is wrong to suppose that part time workers are students living at home without further responsibility just because they are part time.

Many minimum wage earners work more that one part time minimum wage job because they can't get 40 hours a week from their primary minimum wage job employer because the employer does not want to give full time hours so the business can avoid the incidence of overtime and a benefits requirement. That situation is not uncommon and forces them to work multiple part time jobs. The total for these people could well exceed 40+ hours in reality. So a person working two minimum wage jobs would look like part time worker and be counted as such.
