To each his own. I thought Karen did an excellent job of defining the middle ground where in you can afford people a dignified and polite existence. I think that is decent. Respect implies deference. A child should show respect to their parents for many good reasons (some of which they may not have full cognitive awareness of). Most parents are deserving of respect. The person on the street has his/her due also but it may not include respect. The person could be the serial murdering grandmother torturer and raper who has not yet been discovered. You can give them the benefit of doubt and be polite since you don't know them, but how often do people take advantage of respect unearned to manipulate the emotions and good will of strangers? Be decent and dignified without being everybody's dupe. Harmless as a dove as wise as a serpent as the saying goes.
