Ericsson provides IP backbone to global operator France Telecom -- core to North American network

STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 6, 2001--Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERICY - news) announces a breakthrough frame agreement to provide its comprehensive IP backbone network, which includes Juniper Networks leading IP backbone technology, to global customer France Telecom. The solution, support and services will enable France Telecom Long Distance to offer IP backbone traffic with even higher bandwidth and quality of service.

Ericsson will deliver and install large scale AXI 580, AXI 520 and AXI 520-4 IP Backbone Routers (based on Juniper Networks M160(TM), M-40(TM) and M-20(TM) routers) and will provide installation and customer support for these routers throughout the network. The first routers are already in operation in Amsterdam and Paris, and next deployments will equip the first of France Telecom's Long Distance nodes in the North American Backbone Network.

``By combining our proven carrier-class datacom expertise together with best of class IP technology, Ericsson has proven once again its commitment in fulfilling the stringent requirements set forth by successful, global multiservice carriers like France Telecom. This is a unique Ericsson strength,'' said Mike Thurk, sr. vice president of Data Backbone and Optical Networks division in Ericsson.

With Ericsson's solution, the France Telecom Group will continue to meet the rapid growth of Internet traffic and new quality of service and network demands, including MPLS and network based IP-VPNs. These AXI routers will be the transit and regional nodes of France Telecom's IP Core Network. They will allow France Telecom and its foreign affiliates to significantly increase the bandwidth of their backbone networks at the 10 Gbit /s rate and to provide IP backbone capacity and transport services to their carrier, ISP and enterprise customers.

``This is a significant win for Ericsson and Juniper Networks as partners. France Telecom is actively engaged in building converged core network infrastructure. Juniper Networks market expertise combined with fast, reliable and scalable network systems met with the approval of France Telecom specific requirements. We're pleased to help them take advantage of the new IP infrastructure to realize their vision of delivering differentiated revenue generating services,'' stated Scott Kriens, President and CEO of Juniper Networks, Inc.

Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.
