"Compaq Looking for Acquisitions, Sees Europe Weaker
TORONTO (Reuters) - Compaq Computer Corp (NYSE:CPQ - news) is aggressively seeking acquisitions in the services market following its failed bid for Proxicom Inc. in May, while the company is seeing softening in European markets, Compaq Chairman Michael Capellas said on Wednesday.

``We are aggressively looking for acquisitions in the services market,'' said the head of the world's No. 2 computer maker in Toronto.

Capellas said service organizations with information technology capabilities and a focus on the brokerage industry would be potential candidates.

This follows on a failed bid last month for Internet consulting firm Proxicom Inc. (NasdaqNM:PXCM - news) when South Africa's Dimension Data Holding trumped Compaq's $266 bid by about $100 million.

Also, Capellas said the company is seeing some weakness in the German and British consumer markets, and expects this weakness to trickle into corporate accounts.

``The speed and timing of the recovery is hard to predict,'' added Capellas.

In March, Capellas said he expected to see some weakness in Europe.
