"It is supposed to exact retribution for heinous offenses, because for some crimes, life without parole is too lenient....."

That, IMO, is the biggest problem with the issue. The death penalty simply ends society's responsibility to deal with the offender. Punishment, revenge, deterents are really poor excuses for the death penalty.

There are some crimes that have shown themselves throughout history to be irreconcilable. We also see in most scriptural resources that the human condition does not lend itself to accommodation of such crimes and criminals. Life in prison for some people may be lenient while for others it may be the worst kind of torture but it never resolves the heinous criminal event to the point where decent law abiding citizens want the perpetrator living in their homes, neighborhoods or society as fellows. A prison is part of our societal structure and should be looked at as a temporary remedy at best.
