Actually, I'm not a fan of QQQ trading at all, for a variety of reasons including the ones you mention, but at least with the E-minis he'd theoretically be able to exploit greater leverage. The reasons they might make sense for him is that he's trading direct market moves, mainly off 3-minute, sometimes 1- or 10-, futures charts, and he scales in or out (by closing one or another position) only for strong reasons. Though I've encountered disagreements on the validity of futures as an indicator, he believes and seems to find that they do seem to anticipate the kinds of moves he likes to trade with sufficient reliability. I haven't gone into his stock selection criteria with him - I have no idea how scientific his approach is. It may just be his past experience daytrading more conventionally, and his resultant comfort with the specific vehicles. He sticks to 3 to 5 stocks in his "baskets," because he prefers to enter and exit them all simultaneously (with ISLD orders). I wouldn't be surprised if at some point he moves to a strategy more like the one you describe, but, as observed, he's doing well with the strategy he's using, and if it ain't broke...

PS: How's the connection?
