But nobody seemed to want that one.

The P4 really is awful for virtually the entire installed code base. And that situation will continue for years. The whole reason Intel and X86 have been so successful over the years is that they've developed an enormous installed code base, and each generation of processors runs that code base faster than the previous generation. The hard part is the software, not the hardware. Buyers don't buy new sofware so they can run their new hardware faster, they buy new hardware so they can run their old software faster.

P4 broke that chain (and so does Itanium) and the market doesn't seem to like P4 much better than it did Alpha. Even with P4's ability to run the software base, although slowly, and Intel's Billion dollar "Netburst" campaign, rebates, and rambus subsidies.
